Going for glory: Positive attitude to suffering
1 Peter 4:12-19
Surprised by suffering (vs12)
Do we ask “Why Lord?”? Are we surprised by suffering? Or are we rejoicing that we are being tested?
Jesus never promised that life would be easy if we followed Him. “In this world you will have trouble” John 16:33.
Jesus has overcome the world. Suffering is for a purpose. It is all part of God preparing us to be the person He wants us to be. He refines us like silver and gold in the fire of trails and persecution. Our faith should be strengthened by suffering. We should not give up (vs 19)
Why are you suffering? (vs15)
Is it our own fault? Is it sin in your life? Are you a ‘meddler’?
Rejoice in suffering (vs 13-18)
1. We suffer when we stand with Jesus. Rejoice! It should be a joy. Give thanks.
2. When we suffer we are blessed.
3. If you suffer, praise God unashamedly. Do not be ashamed of being a Christian (Roman’s 1:16).
4. Better discipline than judgement. See suffering as discipline.
Commit yourselves to God (vs 19)
“Give God your life, He can do far more with it than you can” (DL Moody).
Don’t do it ‘my way’, do it God’s way.
Do good (vs 19)
What good works do you do? Are you to busy to do good?
