Jesus your name

Jesus your name

Paul began this sermon by encouraging us to sing ‘Jesus your name’ by Matt Redman. The song can be heard¬†here.

Have we lost the significance of the name of Jesus? We often live under negative names placed on our lives. These negative names are applied to our lives and we live under them the majority of our lives.

In Matthew 1:21 Joseph is told, “you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins”. The name Jesus means “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation”. When translated from Hebrew into Aramaic Jesus translates as “Yahshua” which means “rescuer”, “deliverer” or “to save”. When translated from Hebrew into English you get “Joshua” which means “God saves”. When translated from Hebrew into Greek you get “Iesous” which in English is “Jesus”. There is power in a name. A title brings power and the meaning of a name is powerful.

Sometimes we can be under condemnation from the names the world has placed over us. In Jesus we are not condemned (John 3:16-17). We do not have to live under the names people have spoken over us. We need to know the power of the name of Jesus. Everything about us is covered by the name of Jesus. We need to not live under anything that is not of God and live under the name of Jesus.
