Proverbs: Be wise – God’s Wisdom for living in 2019 – Resisting Temptation (Part 2)
Proverbs does not hold back any punches. It deals with the results of temptation and sin head on.
All of us need help resisting temptation.
Fear the Lord
Having a right respect and awe for God.
Fellowship with God
We need to be in fellowship with God. Be intimate with Him and not with sin.
Feed on God’s Word
Proverbs 7:1-3. We need to be people of God’s word. Psalm 119:11 – hide His word in our heart. We need to know God’s word in order to say “It is written……”. If Jesus had to do this then we are fools if we do not do the same. We cannot resist temptation by willpower alone. We need to know God’s word in our heart. We will only know what is right and wrong if we know God’s word and obey it. Head knowledge is not heart knowledge. His teaching is the eyesight we depend on in life.
Follow God’s rules
Proverbs 7:2 – keep my commands that you might live. We need to follow and obey God’s word in order to live in the freedom Jesus brought us. We cannot play with fire without getting burnt. Playing with temptation we will get burnt. Proverbs 6:27-28 – our actions have consequences. The 10 Commandments are not given to spoil our fun. Sin damages and destroys our lives and the lives of those around us.
Proverbs 5:8 – do not go near. Warning signs are there for a reason. How often do we ignore the warning signs? We need to stay on the path. We need to keep away from the things that tempt us. We need to stop playing on the cliff edge!! 1Tim 2:22.
Find wisdom. Wisdom is personified in Jesus. If you have found Jesus you have found freedom. John 10:10.
The Bible says that if we are not a follower of Jesus then we are slaves to sin. When Jesus died he broke the power of sin in our lives. Our chains are broken. He intends us to be free. We need to live in freedom. Galatians 5:1 – It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. He has broken our chains. Stop putting your chains back on!
