Psalms – The joy of praising and pursuing God

Psalms – The joy of praising and pursuing God

Psalm 34:1-8

Psalm 34 is a celebration of praise and worship. It was written by David at one of the worst times of his life (1 Samuel 21:10-15). David says keep on praising and keep on pursuing God.

  1. The joy of praising God (vs 1-3) – We need to praise the Lord even when it is the last thing we want to do.
    1. David’s praise was voluntary – “I WILL bless the Lord at all times” (vs 1). Will you choose to bless the Lord in the worst of circumstances?
    2. David’s praise was constant – “I will bless the Lord AT ALL TIMES” (vs 1).
    3. David’s praise was verbal – “His praise shall CONTINUALLY be in my mouth” (vs 1).
    4. David’s praise was boastful – “My soul makes it’s BOAST in the Lord” (vs 2).
    5. David’s praise was contagious – “Let the humble HEAR AND BE GLAD” (VS 2).
    6. David’s praise is corporate – “magnify the Lord WITH ME and let US exalt His name TOGETHER” (vs 3).
  2. The joy of pursuing God (vs 4-7) – “I SOUGHT THE LORD” (vs 4) is key to understanding David’s attitude in difficult circumstances. He turned to God rather than away from Him. Instead of saying, “Why is this happening?”, David sought the Lord and He answered him. Seeking and hearing from God makes all the difference. If we will seek the Lord, He will deliver us. Fear leads to panic and terror. The answer is to seek the Lord.  As we pursue Jesus the radiance of God shines out from us (vs 5). The results of pursuing God are:
    1. He saves us from all our fears and troubles (vs 4, 6).
    2. Protection – the angel of the Lord encamps around us (vs 7).
    3. He answers our prayers (vs 6).
  3. Enjoy God (vs 8) – Did you know that God wants us to enjoy Him? There is a difference between enduring and enjoying God. The Gospel is GOOD NEWS OF GREAT JOY. You can only know the Lord is good if you experience a living relationship with Him. David says, “TASTE AND SEE that the Lord is good” (vs 8). When we taste and see we will want more of God and as we experience more of God we will be blessed.
