Psalms: The joy of worship and celebration

Psalms: The joy of worship and celebration

Psalm 100

Psalm 100 is all about the people coming to Jerusalem and entering the temple to worship. It was a special event. They were meant to come three times a year for three specific festivals. Many of them only managed it a few times in their lives. It was a special event. It was a pilgrimage. For many it was a long arduous journey. Imagine what it was like to enter the city and enter the temple. It would have been an unforgettable awesome experience.

  1. The people came to worship and praise the Lord – They made a special effort to come to worship God. Their focus was on God. They made sacrifices to be there. They felt privileged to be there. We come to worship the same God and we should have that same sense of excitement and awe at worshipping God. He invites us to be full of awe and wonder at His presence.
  2. The people worshipped with joy and celebration – There was noise and vibrancy. People were shouting and singing songs of praise. We have so much to be joyful about, so much to celebrate. We are forgiven and God lives in us. The Gospel is GOOD NEWS OF GREAT JOY!
  3. Joyful worship leads to service – Where there is joy it should lead to service. We should want to give God our service. True worship should effect our whole lives.
  4. God’s character and works is the basis of joyful worship – Why be joyful? Because the Lord is GOOD.Goodness is the character of God. Have you experienced God’s goodness? God is faithful. Have you experienced God’s faithfulness?
  5. We are His – We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession (1 Peter 2:9). Do you know that you belong to God?
