Pursuing spiritual maturity

Pursuing spiritual maturity

Ephesians 4:7-15

Spiritual growth is a life long process. We do not grow into Jesus’ likeness in one day. We need to put off our old self and put on the new self. After accepting Jesus we begin a personal relationship with God and the Holy Spirit starts to work on us and produces fruit in our lives. The new self becomes our new identity. We are transformed from children of disobedience to children of God. Everybody should know us through our new identity. The process does not stop until we see God in His glory. We are progressing and conforming towards perfection.

2 Peter 2:5-7 calls us to make every effort to add to our faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

Jesus wants us to come to Him with a childlike faith, but we need to grow up and mature in that faith (1 Corinthians 13:11-12, Hebrews 5:11-13). We need to be careful that we are not forever hearing but not learning or growing and we need to be careful we are not carried away by false teaching.

We need to change our desire for the presence of God. We need to seek Him in His Word and in prayer. In order to grow we need to desire God.
