Ordinary people, extraordinary God – Jonathan: Selfless, loving, courageous prince

Ordinary people, extraordinary God – Jonathan: Selfless, loving, courageous prince

1 Samuel 14; 19 & 20

Be a Jonathan for Jesus.

  1. Jonathan was a Prince – Jonathan was heir to the throne. Jonathan put God first in everything he did. He supported David to take over his own place as King of Israel. He refused to resent God’s choice for Israel.
  2. Jonathan had courageous faith – Jonathan was a courageous soldier who put his own life in danger for God. He depended on the Lord and sought God in everything he did. He knew that God would give him the victory in 1 Samuel 14. Jesus calls us to have bold faith in Him today. Fear is the opposite of faith.
  3. Jonathan had selfless love – Jonathan was a prime example of agape love. We are called to have agape love for each other and for those in the world. How much self sacrificial love is there in your life? When we pour our love into ourselves, that is selfish love. We are called to pour our love into others, that is selfless sacrificial agape love.
  4. Jonathan had deep faith in God – It was far more important to Jonathan to worship, honour, obey and serve God than to chase after personal power, position and success. Jonathan wanted to do what God wanted and sacrificed himself to do that. Are you prepared to surrender yourself to God‘s purpose for your life? Are you prepared to be like clay in the potters hands (Jeremiah 18:1-10).
  5. Jonathan invested his life and love into David – God used Jonathan to train and equip David to fulfil his calling from God.
