Ordinary people, extraordinary God – Samuel: Finishing well

Ordinary people, extraordinary God – Samuel: Finishing well

1 Samuel 12:1-25

Will you finish well? Will you here God say, “Well done, good and faithful servant”? It is more important to finish well that to start well.

Samuel started well, kept faithful and finished well. Jesus started well, continued well, finished well and died well. We are called to follow Jesus.

At the end of Samuel’s ministry we see:

  1. Samuels conscience is clear (vs 3-5) – No-one could accuse him of abusing his position.  Every Christian leader should have a clear conscience. All we need to do is confess our sin and ask for forgiveness (1 John 1:8-10). But we also need to recieve that forgiveness.
  2. God’s amazing mercy and faithfulness (vs 6-7) – Samuel testified to what Hod had done. We too can testify to God’s amazing mercy and faithfulness. We can trust God, He is not going to stop being faithful.
  3. Don’t be distracted: respect, serve, obey God (vs 12-14, 24-25) – By wanting a king the people were rejecting Samuel and rejecting God. Be determined to not be distracted by earthly desires. Never lose your respect, awe and wonder of God. The fear, awe respect of God is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 9:10).
  4. You can finish well (vs 20-24) – If you lose your respect, awe and wonder of God you will never finish well. You are God’s child and have been chosen by God. He will never leave you or forsake you. You can die well in confident assurance of your salvation.
