The cancer of unbelief

The cancer of unbelief

Psalm 78:19-22 NKJV

Unbelief is the cancer of Christianity. God wants to put His finger on our unbelief and slice it out like a tumour. Unbelief is the rejection of who God is, what He has said and what He has done. Christians can also harbour unbelief.

Jesus was amazed at some people’s faith, but also at an entire communities unbelief. Is Jesus amazed at your faith or your unbelief.

God gets angry sometimes. He gets angry at the unbelief He finds us. If faith pleases God (Hebrew 11:6) then unbelief angers Him. There are consequences to our unbelief (Hebrews 3:7-12 NKJV). Unbelief is a hardness of heart. Unbelief is evil. God is God and we should believe in Him. If we do not believe we miss out on His promise.

Some believe some things but not others. We all have aspects of unbelief in us. If God is not answering it may well be because of unbelief.

In Mark 6:1-6 NKJV Jesus experienced the unbelief of His own community and He was unable to do mighty works there. These people missed out on the mighty works that Jesus could have done for them.

In Matthew17:19-21 NKJV the man asks the Apostles to deliver his son, but the boy was not healed. Jesus rebuked His disciples for their unbelief. Some are not healed or delivered because of their unbelief. Faith is not the issue, but unbelief is. Prayer and fasting builds faith and kills unbelief. We are in a fight between faith and unbelief.

Unbelief is the greatest enemy to what God wants to do in and through us. Unbelief comes through:

  1. Familiarity – In Mark 6:1-6 the people were uncomfortable with who Jesus had become. Many of us are comfortable with the aspects of Jesus we like and are comfortable with. Some of us have been taught false teaching about what Jesus is capable of today. Some of us are charismatic with a seat belt because we limit what God can do.
  2. Fear – In Numbers 13:27-29 the people were afraid. Unbelief always wants to go first and speak the loudest. The ten went first and they showed fear about the people of the promised land. They were like grasshoppers in their own eyes, not God’s. How quick are we to sacrifice the good because of our fear. Unbelief spreads like wildfire and Numbers 14 we see the people crying in fear. Unbelief hates leadership. Moaning and complaining is routed in unbelief. Our response to unbelief us to silence it. Caleb silenced the people with his faith in God. By faith we speak out the word of God (Romans 10:17).

Unbelief needs to be removed by repentance. We must cleanse ourself of unbelief by repenting of it.
