Do what is good

Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3

We are not saved by good works, but good works are important.

We forget things and often need to be reminded of them. If Scripture tells us to “Remind the people” then what we are to be reminded of is important. Titus us being reminded that the people used to be foolish when they did not do good things. There is a contrast here between being a blessing to others and being disobedient and enslaved to our own passions. Paul is not saying here that good works save us, but good works should follow from our salvation. If we are saved then we should be devote ourselves to doing good (vs 8). We need to work out our salvation not work for it (Ephesians 2:8-10; Philippians 2:12-13).

We need to be a blessing to others. We need to be set apart from the ways of the world. We need to avoid squabbling and infighting (vs 9-11). Titus 1:16 says by our actions we show whether we know God or not.

Salvation is so much more than asking Jesus into our hearts. It is about repentance and faith in what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

Doing good is not a condition of salvation, but an outpouring of what God has done in our lives. A list of good deeds is in 1 Timothy 5:9-10. We must learn to do what is good (Titus 3:14). We need to learn to do good not for what we can get back, but in order to bless others.

Whatever good things we do for others we do for Jesus (Matthew 25:31-46).

God’s desire is that none should perish (2 Peter 3:9). We need to be doing good for others and bringing them with us. Salvation is not just for us, it needs to change us and bring others along with us. Christianity is not just about our relationship with God, it’s about benefitting others.
